Our staffOur director is Dovie R. Wylie, Ph.D.Dovie has been a trainer and consultant in practice in the San Francisco
Bay Area since 1979, working for more than 40 organizations, primarily in
software, biotechnology, and manufacturing. A linguist and a discourse analyst, she is especially
qualified to design training to promote clear, accurate communication in
multilingual and multicultural environments. She holds a B.A. in Latin American Studies from the
University of Pennsylvania, an M.A. in Linguistics from San José State
University, and a doctorate in Linguistics from Stanford University. She conducts training in all aspects
of workplace communication, for both native and non-native speakers. All of our instructors are trained to deliver programs tailored to specific organizational needs.Margaret Tanner Angelopoulos, M.A.,
is on leave. Patricia Carobus, M.A., is a
recent graduate of San José State’s master’s program in Teaching English to
Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
Following her graduation in English and Portuguese from the Universidade
Estadual de Londrina in Paraná, Brazil, she also studied at UPenn and
Michigan. She has been teaching
English since 1998. Sandra Grantham, M.A., has been an
instructor in the workplace since 1990, teaching both English and mathematics
courses. She has worked in more
than 40 companies, and she has taught at Santa Clara University. Her M.A. is in Linguistics and TESOL
from San José State, and her B.A. is in Sociology from the University of
California at Berkeley. Jo Ann Hacker, Ed.D., chaired the
ESL Division at Mission College until 2003. Her extensive background includes experience in corporate
training as well as in developing English programs for clients in Thailand
and China. Her doctorate is in
higher post-secondary education from the University of Southern California,
focusing on cognitive styles among second-language learners. She also has an M.A. in Linguistics
and TESOL from San José State. Rick Murno, M.P.A., combines a
background in marketing for Silicon Valley firms with more recent experience
as an instructor working with nonnative speakers. He has a master’s degree in International Management from
the Monterey Institute of International Studies and a B.S. in French from
Georgetown University. Christine Opie, M.A., has been
teaching English as a Second Language for 25 years, in locations as far-flung
as Mali and Indonesia as well as locally at the College of San Mateo. She earned her graduate degree in
TESOL at San Francisco State.
She teaches both spoken and written communication courses and does
one-on-one coaching. Connie Rylance, M.A., is the
Assistant Director of Stanford's English for Foreign Students program.
Receiving her degree in TESOL from San Francisco State, she has taught since
1977, in Madrid and at UC Berkeley before coming to Stanford in 1988. She has also developed and conducted
numerous English training programs in the workplace. For us, she works with professionals
one on one and teaches written communication. Laura Simeone, M.A., had more than
20 years of experience as a human resources manager at Bay Area corporations
before becoming a trainer. She
received her M.A. in TESOL from San José State and a B.A. in English from the
University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
She is currently teaching courses in professional presentations, in
